Xerox Phaser 6180MFP - Installing a Toner Cartridge

Begin installation of a new toner cartridge by pressing the button located on the upper right side of the printer. This will release the front door to the device so it can be dropped open. Be cautious not to leave the door to the printer open for longer than five minutes as the light exposure could potentially shorten the lifespan of the internal toner cartridge.

The Xerox Phaser 6180MFP will indicate which cartridge needs to be changed by displaying a message on the LCD screen. Locate the correct cartridge inside the machine (black is represented by a K symbol and is located on top of the other cartridges) and remove it by pulling on the tabs on the left and right side of the cartridge. Store old toner cartridges in the box that the new cartridge comes in to prevent toner spillage.

Take the new toner cartridge out of its box and unwrap its package. DO NOT unwrap the new toner cartridge until right before it is to be installed as excess light exposure could potentially shorten the lifespan of the cartridge. Be sure to shake the new cartridge well to distribute the toner inside evenly. Also, pull on the protective strip on the side of the new cartridge and it will slide out of the unit. At this point, it is ready to be installed.

Slide the toner cartridge into place with the protective cover ON. Only once the cartridge is in place should its protective plastic cover be removed. Do not touch the surface that was protected by the cover. (Note: the protective cover is recyclable.)

When the cartridge is LOCKED into place, close the front of the printer and print a test page to ensure that it is installed properly.

Xerox Phaser 6180MFP - Installing a Transfer Unit

When the Xerox Phaser 6180MFP’s transfer belt is nearly warn out, the LCD screen will display a warning message. When the belt has become completely non functional, the printer will cease to operate until a new belt is installed.

Begin installation of the transfer unit by opening the front of the machine. This can be accomplished by pressing the release button on the upper right side of the printer. The transfer unit itself will be located in the DOOR that folds down and is locked in place by two small release levers on BOTH sides of the unit. These levers must be lifted to unlock the unit.

At this point the transfer unit must be ROTATED UPWARDS to free it from its hinges. When the transfer unit sits vertically, then and only then can it be lifted free from its hinges. Please recycle the old transfer belt.

The new transfer unit, when removed from the box it was shipped in, will have a pull tab on it that needs to be pulled off, along with the ribbon attached to it. Do not touch the surfaces that were protected by the ribbon or the belt itself.

Position the new unit vertically and lower it onto the hinges that the old unit rested in, then rotate the unit downwards so it lays flat. Be sure that it snaps into place. AFTER the transfer unit is positioned correctly, remove the protective cover from the belt by peeling it off. With all the packaging material removed, the door to the printer can be closed and a test page printed to ensure that the belt was installed correctly.

Xerox Phaser 6180MFP Review

Overview:

The Xerox Phaser 6180MFP/N and its sister model, the Xerox Phaser 6180MFP/D, add a multifunctional edge to the already popular Xerox Phaser 6180N laser printer. These robust color MFP models deliver heavy performance statistics along with stunning full color print capabilities, making the line a great addition to the office’s hardware set.

Pros:

The Xerox Phaser 6180MFP is available in a duplex and non duplex ready version, surprisingly at a huge cost differential. Either way, the multifunctional color laser device stands as a testament to functionality thanks to excellent print capabilities and well rounded color multifunction features. If you choose not to go with the duplex option initially, one can be added later on, though at an even greater cost.

The unit’s 50 page automatic document feeder is an excellent resource for stand alone faxing, though, as a high end device, the Xerox Phaser 6180MFP is also capable of executing a fax over the network. The ADF is complemented by a solid 400 sheets of standard paper capacity that consists of the obligatory 250 sheet tray along with a 150 sheet multi purpose tray. An additional 550 sheet drawer is available for those who anticipate printing in high volumes, though the price of the drawer alone is more than half that of this already costly unit.

Print speeds run at 31 pages per minute for black and white and 20 pages per minute for color, making it exceptionally fast in both categories. This performance level is largely due to the unit’s 400 MHz processor and 384 MB memory supply, which are obviously beefed up to help handle detailed color printing.

The Xerox Phaser 6180MFP can handle paper sized of up to 8.5 x 14 inch and can print up to 60,000 pages per month total, making it just slightly light in its volume printing abilities for the cost, but still well above average for a color printer.

With a maximum print quality of only 600 x 600 dots per inch, one would think that the unit underperforms other devices in its category, but Xerox has an answer for this. Xerox’s 16 shades of color per pixel (as opposed to the usual 1) can produce near perfect color matches from almost any source, while simulating 1200 x 1200 dot per inch quality at a much faster speed.

Cons:

While it should be noted that the setup automation for the Xerox Phaser 6180MFP is as convenient as it could be, fully configuring the device by itself, the network scanning feature must be set up manually. While network scanning is a rare and welcome addition to the device, having to open a manual to set it up is a burden.

Unfortunately, setting up network faxing also has its own issues, partly due to a weird quirk in the setup process that involves a hard to find fax option instead of providing some sort of easy to use software. Other than the couple network issues that the MFC has though, the Xerox Phaser 6180MFP is a high performing model that delivers.
