Savin C2824 Review

Overview:

As the lowest end and least expensive unit in the Savin C2824/C3528/C4535, the C2824 only cranks out 24 pages per minute in color print speed to the other units’ 28 and 35 respectively. This places the device in the position of being one with industry level color document processing abilities, yet with consumer level speed and performance. This color laser multifunctional hardware, however powerful, should only be taken into consideration by those who do not have heavy print speed requirements.

Pros:

Any laser device, multifunctional or not, that can print in full color should always carry the ability to print in higher resolution than the bland 600 x 600 dot per inch quality found in many monochrome units. The Savin C2824 does not disappoint with a maximum print resolution of 1200 x 1200 dots per inch. This allows for much crisper, cleaner graphics and imagery than 600 dpi printing and is technically four times as accurate. Unfortunately the copy resolution is, in fact, of the disappointing kind, though the device does include the welcome feature of being able to print in large formats.

With large format printing, the Savin C2824 can produce copies and prints as large as 11 x 17 inches. This means that both Ledger and Tabloid material can be produced by the device, though the first paper tray can only hold paper as large as letter size.

This first tray, though unable to handle even a legal sized piece of paper, is capable of loading media types that are not compatible with the two 500 sheet regular paper trays. The 100 sheet bypass tray can be loaded with transparencies, envelopes, and custom greeting cards, which gives the device that extra edge of versatility and furthers the device’s usefulness as a color printer.

Quite a bit of hardware expandability options are available for the Savin C2824. They include a 1 tray bank that boosts the printer’s paper storage capacity by 500 sheets, a 2 tray bank that is twice as big, and a large capacity tray that holds 2 tandem trays worth 1000 sheets each, though 11 x 17 inch paper will have to be loaded in its regular orientation.

Cons:

It is always a huge letdown when a 1200 x 1200 dot per inch multifunctional printer can only copy at a resolution of 600 x 600 dots per inch. When that device is a color laser machine, it is even more annoying and frustrating. When using the Savin C2824’s copy functions, reproductions can only be done in mediocre quality topping out at 600 dpi. This limitation is a result of poor optical scan hardware.

Optical scanning can be done in color, but only up to 600 dots per inch in resolution. If TWAIN is used, then users can actually get the full 1200 dots per inch that they desire in black and white, but color scans can only be done within the range of 100 to 600 dots per inch squared. This weak scan element is truly a major letdown from a device that is far from inexpensive.
