Samsung SCX-4500 Laser Printer Review

Overview:

As one of the most stylish multifunctional devices ever to hit the market, the Samsung SCX-4500 Laser Printer, originally designed almost exclusively for Apple computers, adds an element of aesthetics to a highly functional piece of print hardware. The unit also comes at a fairly low price tag, but also with fairly low performance, making the unit the right choice for those whose value placed on the looks of their print hardware is high.

Pros:

The most outstanding thing about the Samsung SCX-4500 Laser Printer is obviously its unique look. With a cool glossy finish and sleek, square design, this multifunctional device is sure to turn heads in an office setting. The design of the unit is truly unlike anything else ever produced and is even studded with sapphire LEDs that give it a sexy glow when operational.

To keep in line with the luxury car type design of the unit, its paper tray does not have to be yanked out like it does on almost every laser printer available, but instead slides out on its own with one touch of a conveniently located eject button. Unfortunately, the tray only holds a very poor 100 sheets of paper, but this is intended to keep the unit thin and slick looking and is effective in doing so, as the unit’s total dimensions are a mere 332.0mm X 393.0mm X 164.5mm (W x D x H).

Cons:

With such an emphasis on product design, the Samsung SCX-4500 Laser Printer seems to have had quite a bit of performance sacrificed, especially when considering the unit’s price range. While the device is certainly not obscenely expensive, it does cost a significant amount more than your basic run of the mill multifunctional laser printer. The unit’s monthly duty cycle is an inexcusable 5000 pages. With a monthly duty cycle this low, it becomes absolutely crystal clear that the unit is more or less designed for one thing and one thing only, and its looks cannot account for its other performance level shortcomings.

The unit prints at a mere 17 pages per minute for letter sized paper and only 16 pages per minute to A4. Again, for the device’s price range, these specifications are unacceptable. Print resolution is low and tops out at a bare bones 600 x 600 dots per inch and copy quality is the same. The scanning resolution is a little more reasonable at 600 x 2400 dots per inch, but enhanced scan quality is low, further cementing the device as little more than a high tech paperweight.
