HP Laserjet 4300 Review
The LaserJet 4300 is even faster than its predecessors in the 4200 series, designed for expandability and made to be put through its paces by a small office that runs through large quantities of paper. For the small office looking for a now potentially inexpensive refurbished model to serve as their primary printer, the 4300 could easily fulfill their needs, though it may make more sense to find the network-ready 4300n than this base model, as it only provides legacy ports for communication.
The 4300 measures 14.42" by 16.94" by 16.46" and weighs 46 lbs. With all doors and trays fully opened it measures 41.1" by 16.2" by 21.5". However, adding accessories, such as additional paper trays, stackers, or duplex rinting will add several pounds to the printer's weight, likely making necessary that the printer has its own credenza or table to rest on. The 4300 prints letter-sized paper at 45 ppm and A4-sized paper at 43 ppm. This is well above the standard 20 ppm and quite good even many years after the printer's introduction. Some users have reported speeds up to 51 ppm. The printer can handle paper between the custom sizes of 3" by 5" to 8.5" by 14" as well as letter, A4, legal, executive, A5, B5, double postcard, and 16K sizes, as well as transparencies and labels. The 4300 has a standard output capacity of 300 sheets, 250 face down and 50 face up, with a maximum output capacity of 800 sheets. Its recommended monthly volume is a maximum of 200000 pages.
The 4300 prints at a default resolution of 1200 dpi, consistent with the other printers in HP's 4000 series.
The 4300 includes 64 MB of RAM by default, which can be expanded via 3 100-pin DIMM slots to 416 MB. A hard disk is also available, though this adds another potential failure point and set of moving parts to the unit.
The 4300 includes one 100-sheet tray and one 500-sheet tray by default, making it suitable out of the box for small offices that go through around a ream of paper each day. If necessary, this can be expanded to a total of 2600 sheets by adding the 1500-sheet feeder and another 500-sheet tray, readying it for larger office use or for individuals who regularly need to print large quantities of long documents. An optional envelope feeder, capable of moving 75 envelopes at a time, is also available, and may be necessary for those printing envelopes often, as the printer is only able to hold 10 envelopes without it.
Some users report issues with the 4300's fuser unit running out well before its advertised time, prompting some users to claim it as a manufacturing defect, though it has supposedly been fixed as of May 2005 and is far more prevalent on the 4200 series than the 4300. HP has fixed out of warranty printers with these issues.
The 4300 only features an IEEE-1284 Parallel port by default. To connect the printer either via ethernet or USB, you will need to purchase an HP Jetdirect 610n or 615n internal print server or an EIO card that will provide the printer with serial and USB ports. A card that combines these two functions is not available; the two will need to be purchased separately in the event that you need both. |
