The TN-540 (standard-yield) toner cartridge used in your Brother MFC-8640N Multifunction Center has a lifespan of approx. 3,500 A4 pages at 5% coverage. You can increase the useful life of the installed toner cartridge by activating Toner Save ([General Setup] – [Ecology] – [Toner Save] – [On/Off]). One of the listed indications will appear when the installed toner cartridge reaches the end of its useful life.

The message [Toner Empty] is displayed – This message indicates that your Brother MFC-8640N Multifunction Center cannot print or copy due to an empty toner cartridge. You should install a new toner cartridge to resume printing/copying.

The message [Toner Low] is displayed – Printing is still possible in this situation. However, you should replace the installed toner cartridge soon to avoid print quality problems and printing delays.

In the initial step of the replacement procedure, you must open the front cover by pulling its upper section gently towards you, and then pull the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly out of the Brother MFC-8640N Multifunction Center. Please place the removed drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a piece of disposable paper or cloth. After that, you must pull the exhausted toner cartridge out of the drum unit while pressing the release lever that is located on the right, and then remove the replacement toner cartridge from the protective aluminum bag. In the next step of the replacement procedure, you must hold the new toner cartridge with both hands, and shake it several times from side to side to loosen and redistribute the toner. Once you have loosened and redistributed the toner, you must remove the protective cover from the toner roller, and then insert the new toner cartridge into the drum unit until it locks into place. Now, you must grasp the little blue tab that is located on the top side of the drum unit, and slide it several times from left to right and right to left in order to clean the primary corona wire. Please return the cleaning tab back to its original position once you have finished cleaning the primary corona wire of the drum unit. Finally, you must insert the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly into the Brother MFC-8640N Multifunction Center, and then close the front cover.
