Toshiba DP-2570 Review

Overview:

The Toshiba DP-2570 copy machine is not a multifunctional unit out of the box, as its printer functions are only an option to be activated with additional hardware. A variety of other expansion options make the device quite versatile, but also questionably limited as a base copy machine.

Pros:

With Ledger size paper handling abilities, the Toshiba DP-2570 can copy large format material as easily as it can letter sized paper. Its true strength comes in its expandability, however, as the device has quite a large catalog of additional hardware options. These include a hard disk that allows an e filing system to come into play, as well as connectivity options that allow for PCs to be connected to the device so that it can be used as a printer.

As the Toshiba DP-2570 is truly a copy machine at heart, it is equipped with all the usual copy functions one would expect as well as a few surprises. Zooming can be done in 1% increments in ratios of 25 – 400%, and up to 999 copies can be made in a single job function.

Various paper feed options are available for the Toshiba DP-2570 to bring its total paper storage number up and these include two paper feed pedestals that have either one or two 600 sheet cassettes in them. A large capacity feeder is also available and carries an extra large 1,500 sheet additional capacity. Other hardware additions include a platen cover, a slot cover, and a duplex unit that converts the device into a double sided printer/copy machine.

When an additional 2.1 GB hard disk is added to the package, users can save their scanned data directly to the copy machine and print it at a later date in virtually unlimited quantities. Page memory can be expanded as well, though not by much (only 8 MBs total). Lastly, the available finisher is a great way to include automatic stapling as well as sorting in the device’s feature set.

Cons:

With a maximum print resolution of only 600 x 600 dots per inch, the Toshiba DP-2570 is just about as limited as it gets in the area of quality. This device can also only copy at 600 dots per inch, making it very limited in the area of image reproduction. Worst of all, the unit can only produce prints and copies at a rate of 25 pages per minute, placing it at the bottom of the totem pole for mid sized copy machines. When printing to Ledger size material, the unit operates even slower at only 12 pages per minute.

As a copy machine, the Toshiba DP-2570 disappoints with its single page copy speed. The unit offers a weak first copy out time of almost 7 seconds from a full warm up and when the device is completely powered down, making a copy will also suffer the additional 80 second warm up time for the unit. With wait times this long, buyers would be better off investing their money in a much cheaper desktop laser MFC than this now ancient copy machine.
