Brother MFC-8640D Review

Overview:

Every business has the need for a printer, and most business have the need for a copier and scanner as well. If this is the case, then instead of buying each of them separately, you can buy an all in one machine that contains all of this in a small and compact device. The Brother MFC-8640D is a multifunctional machine that is perfect for the small to medium sized business, delivering quality and speed at an affordable price.

Pros:

The MFC-8640D is a monochrome printer, which means it can only print out in black and white. However, the quality in which it prints at is quite good. The highest resolution it can reach is 2400 x 600 dpi. This is much better than your standard printers. The maximum pages per minute you can get is 21 pages. This is a very fast return rate and you will find it hard to max this number out. It can achieve a maximum of 20,000 pages per month, which is more than enough. Unless you are a business that uses a printer for the main part, you won't go even close to this number.

There is a fax mode built into the machine. It allows you to send black and white faxes over its 33.6K bps Super G3 Fax modem. This is equivalent to around 2 seconds very single page. It can auto dial up to 240 locations and broadcast up to 290 locations. It will automatically reduce the size of your document if it is too large with its auto fax reduction feature (this is when receiving a fax). It also allows for dual access. This is very useful and means someone else can be using the machine to print whilst someone else is using it to fax. It is has PC fax capability.

The copying feature on this all in one machine is also very powerful. It copies in black and white at around 21 copies per minute - just like the printer. It has a very neat feature of having a reduction or enlargement tool built in that allows users to make size changes to their documents if needed directly on the machine. This can be done between 25% and 400%.

There is also the ability to scan using this machine. Although it doesn't print or copy in color, the scan feature does have color, as well as black and white. It can reach a quality of up to 9600 dpi interpolated, and a 600 x 2400 dpi optical scan resolution. It can scan the image directly to your email account as an attachment, ready to be sent off to a client. It also includes Scansoft Paperport as its document viewer software.

The toner cartridge it comes with allows for around 3,500 pages before needing to be refilled, and the drum unit can yield around 20,000 pages before needing to be replaced. You can add an optional 250 sheet paper tray if you find yourself refilling the paper up too often. This will effectively save you time. The display is a simple to use backlit LCD. This unfortunately isn't in color though. The machine also has a duplexing option built in. This allows the user to print on both sides of paper automatically.

Cons:

The main and probably only downfall that is stopping this machine from becoming perfect, is the fact that it has no network abilities. This means connecting to the device will have to be done through a wire such as USB. Network capabilities would have been perfect for this machine as the rest of its features are aimed at and suitable for a small to medium sized business. The lack of not being able to print in color is also a disadvantage.

For everyday use, there are not much better choices than the Brother MFC-8640D. It has all of the features any office should have such as printing, copying and faxing. It can even scan in color to a computer. The only downfall is its lack of network connectivity. If you can get past this, then this device is an excellent addition to a small to medium business.
