Brother HL-3075CW Review

Overview:

With wireless capabilities built in, the Brother HL-3075CW is a very easy, inexpensive way to provide access to color laser print capabilities to a wifi enabled network. Its respectable performance specifications make it appropriate for office use, while its affordable price tag makes it an acceptable option for the home office as well.

Pros:

The Brother HL-3075CW’s print speed of only 19 pages per minute is quite sluggish, but reflects the notably low purchase price of the printer. The device may not be the fastest color laser printer on the market, but it is one of the cheapest, at least when dealing with up front cost, as the device’s overall cost per page is a different story.

By using Brother’s iPrint & Scan software, users can print from and scan to their Apple, Android, and Windows 7 phones wirelessly. Users simply download the app onto their phone and JPEG or PDF images can be sent and received from their phone or tablet, except in the case of Windows devices which can only print JPEG and can not receive scan data.

Though it would be preferable for the Brother HL-3075CW to print in true 1200 x 1200 dot per inch resolution or higher, its 600 x 2400 dot per inch quality comes close. While images printed in this resolution will not have the same accuracy as those produced with a true 1200 dpi printer, they will at least have the same number of pixels per inch.

The printer’s 250 sheet standard letter and legal sized paper storage tray is supplemented by the all important single sheet bypass slot that allows users to print to special media such as envelopes, custom greeting cards, and transparencies. While a special media tray would be preferable, the single sheet slot does the trick for most applications and keeps the Brother HL-3075CW’s profile low.

Along with the unit’s relatively short eight of just under 10 inches, its footprint is also reasonable at 16.1 x 18.3 inches (W x D). Considering that color laser print devices are pretty much always bigger than their monochrome counterparts, the Brother HL-3075CW does quite well with its size, though 18 inches is still a little enormous for a small desk.

A back lit LCD display is a welcome addition to the Brother HL-3075CW’s hardware as it makes noticing and understanding the device’s various alerts straightforward and easy. Also on the front cover is a comprehensive dedicated button system that provides a surprising amount of control for an otherwise stripped down color printer.

Cons:

Though the Brother HL-3075CW is a quite affordable way to add color print capabilities to your hardware set, it is not necessarily the unit with the best value per dollar spent. Brother carries color multifunctional devices that, for about a hundred dollars more, can do everything that the 3075 can do as well as fax, copy, and scan. Unless desktop space is at such a premium that the smaller print only device is preferred, users should definitely look into the color multifunctional units from Brother as well as other brands before making a purchase.
