The most important printer component regarding print quality is the drum unit. Herein, you should try to maintain the good working condition of this consumable component by regularly cleaning its primary corona wire. However, once the drum unit reaches the end of its useful life, resp. its printing resource is consumed/exhausted, then even the regular cleaning of the primary corona wire won't help, and the only possible action will be a new drum unit installation. You will be notified by the built-in monitoring system when the installed drum unit needs to be replaced, and this advanced notification will be accomplished by the displaying of the following message ''Drum End Soon'' on the control LCD of your Brother MFC-7840W Multifunction Printer. The displaying of the included above warning message will give you enough time for a new drum unit purchase and installation, in order to be avoided a variety of print quality issues caused by an exhausted drum unit. Another sign for an exhausted or faulty drum unit, which needs to be replaced, is the following message ''Drum Error'' reappearing on the LCD, even after a corona wire cleaning has been performed. You must install a new drum unit in both of the described above situations.

Before proceeding with the current replacement procedure, you must be aware that some printer components are getting extremely hot during operation, and because of that, you should strictly follow the instructions given below and avoid touching any printer components which are not listed in the replacement procedure. Also, you must avoid touching the sensitive photoconductive surface of the drum (top side of the drum unit) and the contact area of the toner cartridge, in order to be avoided future print quality problems.

You must start the drum unit replacement in your Brother MFC-7840W Multifunction Printer by opening the front cover. Then, you must grab the handle of the exhausted drum unit and carefully pull towards you, in order to take the exhausted component out of the printer. Now, you must remove the toner cartridge from the exhausted drum unit by pushing down the green lock lever and pulling the cartridge upwards, and then unpack the new drum unit. Immediately after that, you must insert the toner cartridge into the drum unit until it clicks into place, and the green lock lever is automatically elevated/raised. Once the new drum unit and the toner cartridge are assembled, you must locate the green cleaning tab (on the top side of the new drum unit) and slide it to the end of the cleaning channel. After that, you must slide the green cleaning tab back to its original position, and then repeat the previous and the current steps 3-4 times, in order to be optimally cleaned the primary corona wire of the new drum unit. In the next step of the replacement procedure, you must make sure that the green cleaning tab is back to its original position, and then insert the new drum unit along with the attached toner cartridge into the printer. Then, you must reset the drum unit counter by pressing the [Clear/Back] button and confirming the new drum unit installation by pressing the [1] button. Finally, you must wait for the following message ''Accepted'' to appear on the control LCD, and then close the front cover of your Brother MFC-7840W Multifunction Printer.
