Dell 1320C Review

Overview:

While the Dell 1320C is not nearly as fast as some of the newer color laser printers on the market, the unit is inexpensive and straightforward in design. Its print quality is also relatively high, making a good option for the individual who requires color print capabilities as well as black and white.

Pros:

The real draw of the Dell 1320C printer is simply the fact that it prints in color and does so inexpensively. The unit’s overall print speeds are very slow, but its first page out times of 18 seconds for monochrome and 21 seconds for color mean that the user who simply needs to print the occasional photo or color graph will not be kept waiting too long.

Unfortunately the device’s actual print resolution tops out at only 600 x 600 dots per inch. Luckily, this Dell product seems to maintain very high overall color print quality and scores very well on image printing tests regardless of its actual resolution.

To indicate various status reports and information, the Dell 1320C relies on a semi-unique system of 13 LED lights and icons on its front panel, making for a very simplistic look and feel. An LCD screen is almost always preferred, but the device does not really require it as most of its options are designed to be adjusted through host software.

For what the printer is, its maximum monthly duty cycle is more than adequate at 35,000 pages. Dell recommends only 400 to 1,200 page per month to be printed for maximum product life, but it is still good to know that, if needed, the device can crank out quite a heavy workload without incident. Dell’s support team will also cover the product under warranty for a year after purchase.

The unit comes with a standard 250 sheet covered drawer and a 150 sheet top bin. Additionally, it is equipped with a single sheet front loading bypass slot that allows the device to print to special media such as cards, transparencies, and envelopes. The unit, though there is no “mention” of it in the product number, is also network ready and comes complete with a built in Ethernet port. A non-networkable version of the device can be special ordered from Dell.

Cons:

While the Dell 1320C is cheap to operate, users will suffer from poor print performance when using the device. It operates at only 12 pages per minute when printing in color and only 16 pages per minute when printing black and white. If low volume color printing is all a user requires, an inkjet device may be the better option due to extremely cheap startup costs and much faster print speeds.

With only 8 MBs of read only memory, the Dell 1320C is not exactly the most well equipped printer in this area. It also has another 64 MBs of random access memory, but is not expandable so users do not have the option of giving their printer a little boost when it comes to dealing with more complex print material such as mixed text and color graphics.
