21 Products for the HP LaserJet 1100 Laser Printer
HP LaserJet 1100 Review
The HP LaserJet 1100 is a legacy black and white laser printer designed to handle heavier workloads in small office and home office environments. Have a novel that you are thinking about writing? Need to print page after page of text from a computer that is dedicated to word processing? This printer will provide laser quality at an ink jet price. An optional attachment can be purchased to add scanning and copying capabilities.
The HP LaserJet 1100 is designed for higher volume, more constant production while at the same time featuring a compact design that will fit a very small workspace. A top resolution of 600 x 600 dots per inch makes it possible to print text documents with amazing clarity. People working in small offices can easily print out decent quantities of memos, business letters, invoices and other documents in a way that is practical and convenient. An EconoMode print setting is designed to conserve toner when printing documents with a small amount of printed area and a duplexing setting allows for printing on both sides of a page. N-up printing is another feature that allows condensing of multiple pages on one sheet to save space and reduce cost of consumables. A built-in security feature can be set to watermark documents as confidential or private. A job can be programmed to print the first page of a multi-page run on different paper than the rest of the pages to aid in do-it-yourself book publishing. Selectable booklet printing jobs enable guided printing of pages required to create greeting cards. Multiple pages can be folded and stapled to make low-cost brochures and pamphlets. Printer memory can be upgraded to 18 MB with a industry standard DIMM module through one expansion slot. This provides a cost-effective means of expansion since RAM does not have to be purchased exclusively from one supplier. It can be obtained from any computer parts outlet. Input bin capacity is at 125 sheets and output bin capacity is at 100 sheets, almost a 1:1 input to output ratio, making it possible to set up a 12 and a half minute, unattended print job. Paper sizes ranging from 3" by 5" to 8.5" by 14" legal size are supported. The straight-through output path allows for various other types of media, such as envelopes and various types of card stock. This machine can operate in a wider range of temperature environments than most smaller printers, allowing for use in less stable temperature environments such as factories.
The HP LaserJet 1100 has a top printing speed of 8 pages per minute, which is slow according to today's standards for laser printing at 600 x 600 resolution but about average for decent quality ink jet text document output. Paper weight capacity is limited to a standard weight of 20 pounds for consistent performance with the least trouble. Any deviation can cause the feeder to load multiple pages at once or jam, even though the manufacturer rates the paper weight range at between 16 and 43 pounds. The now-obsolete DIMM module that is required for memory upgrade is harder to find than most new types and can make upgrading memory difficult to do. The only means of connecting this printer to a computer is via a bi-directional parallel port. No USB connectivity is possible. This eliminates plug-and-play compatibility and requires some effort to load drivers and to configure in a Windows environment. It is often necessary to load heavier weights of paper, especially envelopes and card stock, manually into the feeder one at a time to ensure smooth printing without compromising quality or jamming the mechanism. This unit consumes 400 Watts of power while fully operational, exceeding energy star compliance specifications, despite a sleep mode power consumption of only 6 Watts. |
