LEXMARK E340 TONER CARTRIDGE

The toner cartridge is a consumable, user-replaceable component. You can check how much toner remains in the toner cartridge installed in your Lexmark E340 Laser Printer by printing a menu settings page (select [Utilities] – [Print Menus]). Please note that you can use the Local Printer Settings Utility to decrease the Toner Darkness setting in order to extend the useful life of the installed toner cartridge. Alternatively, you can reduce the print density of your documents by selecting [Quality] – [Toner Darkness]. The installed toner cartridge should be replaced when/if:

· The Lexmark E340 Laser Printer stops printing, displays the message [Toner Low], and sounds three quick beeps – The installed toner cartridge is nearly empty. Printing with a nearly empty toner cartridge can cause various print quality problems. Thus, you should install a new toner cartridge in the laser printer.

· The message [Change Cartridge Invalid Refill] is displayed – You have installed a refilled toner cartridge that cannot be used in your Lexmark E340 Laser Printer. Please install a new toner cartridge.

· The message [31 Missing or Defective Cartridge] is displayed – The Lexmark E340 Laser Printer does not detect the toner cartridge. You must make sure that the toner cartridge is installed. Please install a new toner cartridge if the problem persists.

· The message [32 Unsupported Print Cartridge] is displayed – The installed toner cartridge is not intended for use in your Lexmark E340 Laser Printer. Please install a new, compatible toner cartridge.

· The message [42 Cartridge Region Mismatch] is displayed – The installed toner cartridge is designed for use in a different geographical region. Please replace the installed toner cartridge with a new, compatible one.

· Poor print quality

In the initial step of the replacement procedure, you must press the release button located on the left side of the Lexmark E340 Laser Printer, and then open the front cover. After that, you must press the release button located on the front side of the drum unit (below the toner cartridge), and then pull the used toner cartridge out of the laser printer. Now, you must remove the packing material from the new toner cartridge, and then firmly shake the new component from side to side to loosen the toner. In the next step of the replacement procedure, you must align the white rollers of the new toner cartridge with the guides of the slot, and then insert the cartridge into the Lexmark E340 Laser Printer until it clicks into place. Finally, you must close the front cover, and then test the laser printer.

The controller card installed in your Lexmark E340 Laser Printer should be replaced if:

· The error code [90x] is displayed – This is an indication for a faulty component on the controller card. Please replace the installed controller card with a new one.

· The error code [951], [954], [955], [956], [957], [958], or [959] is displayed – The listed error codes indicate a failed controller card (defective SNVRAM). You must replace the installed controller card.

· The error code [97x] is displayed – The Lexmark E340 Laser Printer has detected an error in the network circuitry. Please install a new controller card.

· The error code [960] is displayed – This error code indicates that the DRAM of the controller card is defective. Please replace the controller card.

· The cooling fan does not function – You should replace the cooling fan, and then test the laser printer. Please install a new controller card if the problem persists.

· The Lexmark E340 Laser Printer fails to complete POST without displaying an error message

· All control panel LEDs stay lit during POST

· All control panel LEDs are dim and operate erratically during POST

· The Lexmark E340 Laser Printer fails to print on command from the computer – You must make sure that the printer cable that you are using supports bidirectional printing, and that the printer software is set up correctly. Please replace the controller card if the problem persists.

In the first step of the replacement procedure, you must switch the Lexmark E340 Laser Printer off, unplug the power cord, and then open the front cover. Next, you must open the rear door, and then release the latches of the right side cover. After that, you must swing the right side cover open, and then remove it by unhooking it from the main frame. Now, you must remove the screw from the metal cover of the controller card, and then disconnect all cables from the controller card. In the next step of the replacement procedure, you must remove the mounting screws of the parallel and USB ports, remove the five screws securing the controller card to the metal side frame, and then remove the controller card from the laser printer. Finally, you must unpack the new controller card, and then install it by executing the current procedure in reverse order.

You should replace the installed fuser assembly unit if any of the listed error codes and print quality problems appears.

· Error codes from 920 to 925 – The Lexmark E340 Laser Printer has detected a fuser-related error. You should check the fuser assembly unit for correct installation and connection, and then restart the laser printer. Please replace the installed fuser assembly unit if the same error is displayed after the restart.

· Poor stacking; Paper treeing problems; Curl; - The installed fuser assembly unit operates at excessive temperatures due to a worn backup roller. You should replace the installed fuser assembly unit with a new one.

· Toner on back of page – You should inspect the hot roller and the backup roller for signs of contamination and wear, and replace the installed fuser assembly unit if necessary.

· Toner is not being fused

Initially, you must switch the Lexmark E340 Laser Printer off, unplug the power cord, and then open the front cover. Next, you must open the rear door, and then release the latches of the front cover. After that, you must lift the front cover over the pivot points, and then remove it by sliding it down. Now, you must remove the mounting screw from the left side cover, and then remove the cover by releasing its latches. Once the left side cover is removed, you must remove the right side cover, and then remove the two screws securing the rear cover. In the next step of the replacement procedure, you must remove the rear cover by unhooking it from the main frame, and then remove the three screws from the paper exit-guide assembly. After that, you must remove the paper exit-guide assembly from the laser printer, and then remove the two fixing screws from the exhausted fuser assembly unit. Next, you must unplug the thermistor connectors from the controller card, slide the exhausted fuser assembly unit about 3 inches towards you, and then expose the connectors of the fuser power cables by sliding the insulation back. Now, you must disconnect the fuser power cables, and then remove the exhausted fuser assembly unit from the Lexmark E340 Laser Printer. Finally, you must unpack the new fuser assembly unit, and then install it by executing the current procedure in reverse order.

You should replace the installed transfer roller if any of the listed print quality problems appears.

· Uneven image density – You should try to improve print quality by installing a new drum unit. Please replace the transfer roller if print quality remains unsatisfactory.

· Printouts are faded – You should check if the amount of toner remaining in the installed toner cartridge is sufficient, and install a new toner cartridge if necessary. Please install a new transfer roller if print quality does not improve.

· Toner on back of page – You should inspect the installed transfer roller for contamination and wear, and replace it if necessary.

In the initial step of the replacement procedure, you must switch the Lexmark E340 Laser Printer off, and then open the front cover. After that, you must release the right end of the exhausted transfer roller by pulling it up while squeezing the holder arms, and then release the left end of the exhausted component. Now, you must hold the exhausted transfer roller by the ends, and pull it out of the machine. Once the exhausted transfer roller is removed, you must ensure that the tension springs are inserted into the bearings of the slot, and then unpack the replacement component. Please place a sheet of clean paper around the new transfer roller to protect it. In the next step of the replacement procedure, you must insert the left end of the new transfer roller into the slot until the holder arms click into place, and then lower the right end of the new component into place. Finally, you must close the front cover, and then switch the Lexmark E340 Laser Printer on.
