Lexmark X363 Review

Overview:

Priced much more affordably than its Lexmark X463, higher end counterpart, the Lexmark X363 is actually closer to a reasonable value for the money than other multifunctional units in Lexmark’s X series. The device is still a long ways away from being a true bargain due to its overstated performance specifications and mediocre multifunctionality, but it is at least worth considering for purchase which is more than can be said about some other models in the line.

Pros:

Printing at 35 pages per minute with a 7 second first page out time, the Lexmark X363 is above average when it comes to speed. The device is also capable of printing at a quality level that is much better than the 600 x 600 dot per inch resolution seen on a lot of printers. Its true 1200 x 1200 dot per inch res makes for much clearer black and white imagery and noticeably more professional looking text.

Faxing is not included in the device’s hardware as this feature is left for the Lexmark X363’s sister model, the Lexmark X364. All other features, including memory, are the same for the two devices, which means that those who wish to shell out the extra cash for a fax modem are free to do so and those that a modem would not benefit can save a little bit of money on their purchase.

An 80,000 page per month maximum duty cycle ensures that, even under heavy stress, the Lexmark X363 will maintain its integrity. The device’s recommended print and copy amount per month is only 750 to 5,000 pages, which does not change the fact that the device can take a reasonable amount of abuse. If problems to occur with the hardware, it is always good to know that buyers are protected under Lexmark’s one year limited warranty plan.

The Lexmark X363DN is equipped with a network card as well as a built in duplexer. Network connectivity results in money saving possibilities by way of sharing a single device as opposed to buying multiples, while duplexing can help reduce paper usage by as much as half when in use.

Cons:

To retain a reasonable overhead cost, the Lexmark X363 skimps in a few areas that should be noted such as memory. While 128 MBs of RAM included is respectable, the device cannot be upgraded with an additional card as the unit does not come complete with a DIMM slot. It is also a little bit on the loud side with an operating noise level of 54 dBA.

It is always a big disappointment when a 1200 dot per inch printer is paired up with a 600 x 600 dot per inch scanner. This results in copy and scan quality that is one fourth that of what the printer is capable of producing. Basic copy features such as reduction and enlargement in ratios of 25 – 400% come as part of the package, but it would be preferable to simply have the capabilities to make a high resolution reproduction with this machine.
