OkiData C330DN Review

Overview:

A color LED printer with a fairly substantive feature set in a compact package, the OkiData C330DN offers more than enough options to satisfy many small office and single-digit user workgroup environments, though many larger models offer considerably faster page-outs and long-term options for expansion.

Pros:

The printer measures 9.5" by 16" by 19", making it fairly small when compared to many other printers at similar capacities. It also weighs 48.5 lbs, in line with similar models. The printer should have no trouble fitting on a dedicated piece of furniture, such as a cabinet or credenza, but could easily be stored alongside other equipment with minimal inconvenience.

The C330DN produces documents at maximum speeds of 22 pages per minute in color and 24 pages per minute in black and white, with times to first print of 9 seconds in color and 8.5 seconds in black and white, with a 60 second warmup time. Prints are made at a maximum resolution of 1200 by 600 dpi, comparable with most other desktop laser printers (a handful of models now offer higher resolutions).

The C330DN ships with a 250 sheet tray and a 100 sheet multipurpose tray, though this can be expanded by adding a 530 sheet optional tray, bringing the printer's capacity up to a maximum of 880 sheets. The C330DN supports printing to A4, A5, B5, and A6-sized sheets of paper, as well as envelopes sized C5, DL, Com-9, Com-10, and Monarch. Beyond this, the printer can process 3" by 5" index cards, 4" by 6" and 5" by 7" photos, and custom sized documents up to 47".

Duplex printing is available as a standard option for documents sized A4, A5, and B5, an option not often available as a standard feature on desktop models.

The C330DN includes a USB 2.0 port and a 10/100TX Ethernet port for easy data transfers and networking support (supported network protocols include TCP/IP, ARP, IPv4 and v6, INMP v4 and v6, TCP, UDP, LPR, FTP, Telnet, HTTP, BootP, DHCP, SNMP v1 and v3, POP3, SNTP, JetDirect, NetBIOS, NetWare, AppleTalk, NetBEUI, and several others, including SSL/TLS and HTTPS support for encrypted data transfers. The printer also includes PCL6 PostScript 3 emulation and SIDM print languages, as well as 87 PCL fonts, 80 PostScript fonts, PCL Bitmap fonts, and support for USPS Zip barcodes.

The C330DN ships with 128MB of RAM, which can be expanded to 640MB by adding a 256MB or 512MB module.

The C330DN's redesigned printing engine unifies color toner cartridges into a single unit, which eliminates tedious calibration procedures and makes the process of clearing jammed paper considerably less time consuming, as the integrated unit moves in and out much faster than three individual units do. 

Cons:

The C330DN suffers from subpar color quality, making it a poor choice for users who expect to require high-quality color prints on a regular basis. Users in such situations will likely want to consider a higher-end laser printer or a dedicated high-end inkjet for color prints.

While there is a fair amount of convenience in the three-cartridge toner system that the printer uses to handle color toner, it does have the potential to waste some toner as a consequence, especially if users regularly produce documents using only one or two colors.

The printer's page processing time varies on an individual basis by detail and complexity of the pages being processed, making prints sometimes unpredictable in terms of how long they do or do not take to produce.
