Overview:

The Okidata C6150 series includes four model variations that give users the power to choose the hardware set that best suits their particular needs. These network ready workgroup printers offer full color printing capabilities and reasonable costs per page, as well as an optional 40 GB hard disk option that transforms the single function printer into a color document server.

Pros:

The Okidata C6150 consists of four printers that all have the same core print hardware but carry a variety of different arrangements of supplemental features. The Okidata C6150N, Okidata C6150DN, Okidata C6150DTN, and Okidata C6150HDN all come complete with a network card, while some models also have an additional paper tray, a duplexer, and the aforementioned hard drive.

Powered by a built in 500 MHz processor, the color printers in the Okidata C6150 line are capable of pumping out 26 pages per minute of color print speed and up to 32 pages per minute in black and white. With 26 pages per minute, this Okidata is almost as fast as color printers that cost about twice as much. For a sacrifice of about 4 pages per minute in speed, the printer could save a buyer about a thousand dollars.

The drum and toner setup used in the Okidata C6150 is quite a toner efficient one, however costly it may be. The device takes advantage of a four drum setup, as opposed to a single drum that accommodates four individual toner cartridges. This ensures longer lives of the drums and also a minimized amount of waste when it comes to consumables.

First page out times that the Okidata C6150 is capable of are not super spectacular, but are definitely up to par. It takes the machine about 9 seconds to complete its first page of color printing and a slightly faster 8 seconds when dealing exclusively in black and white. The duty cycle of the machine allows for much more than single page printing, however, as the device is equipped to handle up to 60,000 prints per month.

To assist with complex image printing, the Okidata C6150’s memory is upgradable to a maximum of 768 MBs total, and its stock 256 MBs of RAM should be sufficient for many users’ demands.

Cons:

The Okidata C6150’s color print resolution of only 1200 x 600 dots per inch means that the device has half the print quality of the very common 1200 dpi standard that is found in most color printers on the market today. Without extra high print resolution, users will not truly be able to take advantage of their color printer as imagery will not quite be as crisp and accurate as it would be with other printers in the category.

As a questionable attempt to preserve picture quality, the Okidata C6150 specifically lists photo paper as one of its compatible media formats. The usual 4 x 6 or 5 x 7 glossy paper sizes can be loaded into the device, but this does not change the fact that the printer still prints at average resolution.
