The exact lifespan of the toner cartridge installed in your Brother MFC-8690DW Multifunction Printer could not be specified, because it is defined by various factors, such as the type of the installed toner cartridge (starter/standard/high yield), the type of used paper, the average percentage of page coverage, the used printer settings (toner save mode on/off),etc... ''Replace Toner'' – This is a non-operational mode indication, caused by a completely exhausted/emptied toner cartridge. All printing operations will be suspended, once this message appears on the LCD. The only available action is a new toner cartridge installation.

The toner cartridge used in your Brother MFC-8690DW Multifunction Printer is installed into a special slot of the drum unit. Therefore, you must open the front cover of your printer, and then remove the drum unit by pulling it carefully towards you, but please be aware that some of the surrounding printer components will be hot. Once the drum unit is out of the printer, you have to push the blue lock release lever and pull the exhausted toner cartridge towards you, in order to remove it, and then take the new toner cartridge out of the transport packaging. After that, you must prepare the new toner cartridge for installation by shaking it seven-eight times from side to side, and then remove the colored protective cover from the contact area of the new toner cartridge. Please be aware that the sensitive surface of the drum (on the top side of the drum unit) and the contact area (under the colored protective cover) of the new toner cartridge will be permanently damaged, if you touch them. Now, you must insert the prepared new toner cartridge into the drum unit until it clicks into place, and then look at the top side of the drum unit and located the blue corona wire cleaning tab. In the next step of the toner cartridge replacement procedure, you must slide several times the previously located blue cleaning tab to the right end of the cleaning channel and back to its original position, in order the primary corona wire of the drum unit to be optimally cleaned. After that, you must make sure that the blue cleaning tab is back to its original position (on the left end of the cleaning channel), and then insert the drum unit into the printer.
