Brother MFC-8890DW Review

Overview:

The Brother 8890DW has it all; speed, versatility, and reliability. The only catch to this extensive piece of hardware is a high overhead cost but, in the long run, the device is almost certain to give buyers their money’s worth with its rapid print speeds and easy to set up wireless connectivity.

Pros:

While the Brother MFC-8480DN is more or less a fully loaded multifunctional unit, coming complete with fax, copy, scan, and print capabilities, its sister unit, the Brother MFC-8890DW, takes the hardware one step further. While the 8480 was equipped with an Ethernet port, the 8890 comes with wifi connectability built in. Additionally, the 8890DW is capable of duplex scanning while the lower end model is not.

With these inclusions in the feature set, users will pay about a hundred dollars more than they would for the Brother MFC-8480DN, but the convenience of wireless connectivity almost pays for itself. Also remember that with a reversing automatic document feeder, handling double sided material is as easy as it gets. Two sided documents can be placed in the document feeder for copying, and two sided copies are produced with no additional user interaction on either end.

Thanks to Brother’s innovative mushroom cloud design, the Brother MFC-8890DW, with its small footprint, still manages to squeeze a legal sized document glass on top of the machine. This makes for a device that takes up less space on the desktop yet can still scan and copy larger objects and paper.

A 50 page automatic document feeder allows for scanning and copying as well and the unit’s 250 sheet paper storage tray keeps replacement cycles long. An additional 50 sheet multipurpose tray is also present in the device and is compatible with much thicker paper types than the standard tray which is really only good for letter or legal sized storage. An additional 250 sheet tray is available to expand the device’s paper storage capacity to 550 sheets while also allowing 3 different paper types to be on hand at once.

As far as print speed goes, the Brother MFC-8890DW is at the top of its game. It manages to squeeze out an extra 2 pages per minute over the commonly seen 30 page per minute standard. At 32 pages per minute, this device can print and copy virtually as fast as many medium sized copy machines.

The printer can also produce very high resolution for a monochrome MFC. Adjustable up to true 1200 x 1200 dots per inch, the Brother MFC-8890DW can produce impressively accurate imagery and sharp line drawings and graphs. 

Cons:

The only factor that would make the Brother MFC-8890DW undesirable is its high price tag. A list price of five hundred dollars is prohibitively costly for those who are on a tight budget, especially for buyers who really do not require all the bells and whistles. Those looking for a less extensive unit will be happy to find laser multifunctional devices that are nearly or just as fast at less than half the price of the Brother MFC-8890DW.
